Sensory Foundation introduces the essentials of sensory evaluation, by investigating how our senses influence perception and how to apply this knowledge when evaluating coffee.

Learners gain the ability to differentiate certain sensorial aspects of coffee including body, acidity, bitterness, and more. The course introduces fragrance identification references and also focuses on the purpose and procedure for conducting an SCA cupping. Learners gain insight into identifying specialty coffee qualities, as well as an overview of how to implement this in business.

This is a blended learning class, meaning that you will need to select your preferred virtual classroom session (Theory) above and In-person session (Practical) when completing the registration form. It is mandatory to complete your virtual class before attending your practical class.

Who Should Attend

Aspiring baristas, roasters and coffee professionals looking to understand the sensory basics of specialty coffee

Mode of delivery

  1. E-learning (45 mins) - What is Specialty Coffee? (You will only need to complete this once, if you are signed up for multiple SCA Foundation classes) 

  2. Virtual Classroom (2.5 hours)- The theory components of the module you have signed up for will be taught by an instructor in a Virtual Classroom, on the date that you have signed up for. 

  3. Practical (6 hours) - There is then a practical component of the class where you will visit our Academy and be guided by an instructor on the hands-on components of the module you have signed up for. Please choose your practical date from the options above and indicate your choice at checkout. 

  4. Test - theory (online)

Course Fees

Sensory Foundation - Funding Table

Funding Support Period: 26 Aug 2022 - 31 May 2025

The course fee includes course learning material, SCA examination and certification. You will be eligible for the SCA Foundation Certificate once you complete the course and obtain a passing mark for the theory exam (online).

Note: Theory re-exam/re-enrolment fee is S$40.00 (upon 2 failed attempts)

Students may also opt out of the exam if they choose to. There will be no SCA certification given in this case, but a certificate of completion from Bettr Barista.

Prerequisites

We require a minimum number of 4 learners to run each class. If the number of sign-ups does not meet this requirement, learners will be notified and have their class rescheduled to the next available date.
