For those of you looking to pursue the barista profession, or are looking to refine your skills and expand your horizons, the Barista Masterclass was crafted for you.

Kicking off with the essential foundation modules, it goes further to provide you with the necessary competencies and skills to run an espresso and alternative specialty brew bar. Featuring a duo of Barista and Brewing Skills foundation to start, the Barista Masterclass encourages you to go further with Sensory Skills Foundation and Barista Skills Intermediate. These four modules will set you up to successfully work with Specialty Coffee.

1. SCA Barista Skills Foundation
Barista Skills Foundation allows learners to gain an understanding of coffee itself as well as foundational skills required to operate an espresso bar. This includes, how to set a grinder, make espressos, foam and texture milk and latte art techniques as per SCA quality standards, while implementing health and safety practices and customer service.

What you will learn:

  • Coffee journey from seed to cup
  • Differences between Robusta and Arabica coffee
  • Introduction of specialty coffee and trends
  • Gain insight into the Bettr Barista coffee education system

2. SCA Brewing Foundation
Brewing Foundation introduces the learner to the different methods of brewing coffee in a theoretical and practical hands-on manner for a range of devices. This will include automatic and manual gravity brewers, as well as other commonly used brewers in Singapore.

What you will learn:

  • Introduction to Coffee and Coffee Extraction
  • The Essential Elements of Brew
  • Introduction to Brewing Methods

3. SCA Sensory Foundation
Sensory Foundation introduces the essentials of sensory evaluation, by investigating how our senses influence perception and how to apply this knowledge when evaluating coffee.

What you will learn:

  • What is sensory analysis and evaluation?
  • Why is sensory analysis important in coffee?
  • Tastes and aromas in coffee
  • Cupping protocols
  • Core sensory equipment

4. SCA Barista Skills Intermediate
Barista Skills Intermediate is ideal for those who have barista experience and want to improve coffee quality, while preparing for more complex job functions in the barista profession. It builds on from the Barista Skills Foundation Module.

What you will learn:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of coffee
  • Parameters of coffee quantity, grind texture, water quality, and shot time
  • Drink construction and taste differences
  • Workflow management and efficiency
  • Sensory aspects of the espresso extraction;
  • Milk handling and techniques as well as latte art

Who Should Attend

Aspiring career baristas, with minimal or no prior experience

Mode of delivery

All of these modules are delivered via Blending Learning. The theory components are conducted in one session via a Zoom webinar, followed by in-person practical class in the Academy.

E-learning (45 mins) - What is Specialty Coffee? (You will only need to complete this once, if you are signed up for multiple SCA Foundation classes)

Virtual Classroom - The theory components of the module you have signed up for will be taught by an instructor in a Virtual Classroom, on the date that you have signed up for.

Practical - Followed by a practical component of the class at our Academy. 

Exam - theory (online)

Course Fees

The course fee includes online theory tests and practical test for each module.

Any subsequent retests will be charged as follows:

  • Online theory retest/re-enrolment - S$40.00
  • Practical retest - S$120.00 (for Barista Skills Intermediate only)

Students must complete the online theory test (2 attempts) within 21 days from the date of receiving the exam links. After which there will be a S$40.00 administration fee re-enrolment incurred due to the exam link expiration.

Practical Exam: 1.5 Hour time slots on designated exam days, exact date and time to be arranged and confirmed with the trainer.

Students may also opt to not do the assessments if they choose to. There will be no SCA certification given in this case, but a certificate of completion from Bettr Barista.

Funding and Subsidies

You may utilise your SkillsFuture Credits to fund the Barista Skills Foundation portion of this series. Do choose the SkillsFuture Credit option at checkout, and we will be in touch for next steps.


We require a minimum number of 6 learners to run each class. If the number of sign-ups does not meet this requirement, learners will be notified and have their class rescheduled to the next available date.
