WSQ Provide Specialty Coffee Service covers a comprehensive range of topics, such as coffee knowledge, hand brewing, and espresso, as well as milk steaming. It is also a 2.5 day course, therefore it's conducted at a more relaxed pace. On the other hand, SCA Barista Skills Foundation prepares learners to be work-ready in the industry, therefore the pace is more intensive. FAQ - If I take the SCA path, why do I need to take both Barista & Brewing skills to be a home barista?
Featuring a duo of Barista and Brewing Skills, this option will equip you to handle an espresso bar as well as introduce you to hand-brewing methods. Most of us do not have an espresso machine at home and hand brewing methods are much more accessible, therefore the combo.
In the pre-class elearning module on "What is Specialty Coffee", you will be introduced to the "Seed to Cup" journey of coffee and be exposed to the underlying factors that affect the acidity, body and flavour of a cup of specialty coffee.
In the practical classes Barista Skills will cover everything on setting up of espresso station, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, steps of espresso, grinder calibration (adjusting grind size to achieve ideal extraction) and milk steaming techniques. Brewing Skills introduces you to alternative non-espresso brewing methods such as gravity, immersion and hybrid. Combination of these two modules is sure to provide the home barista with simple and delicious recipes for your next brew!
