Day 1 - Anchor programme: Physical & Emotional Wellness

10.45AM-12Pm: guided relaxation & Yoga with Denise Chew

We kick off the morning with yoga (incorporating breathing and guided relaxation) to reconnect with our bodies and bring stillness and grounding.

Focusing on the breath helps to quieten my mind, building self-awareness and calmness which I carry over from my practice to daily life. After each practice, I feel calmer and refreshed - in body, mind and spirit.

1-5pm: Building Emotional Muscle with Saima Salman

We then embark on a half-day deep dive that introduces you to an empowered way of thinking, feeling and behaving.

We CAN actually refuse to be miserable about most things in life by taking responsibility for our emotional responses and stop putting it on others. Change starts not from fixing others, but rather fixing the way we think or feel about them. Being angry is not going to magically transform things for us. So we have to flex and build our emotional muscle and go through the process of disputing and challenging our own crappy beliefs - essentially cognitive distortions - in order to transform our outcomes into something brighter.

Sometimes there is no getting away from the people, situations or things that drive you up the wall. Rationally speaking, the best thing you can do is learn the right skills to manage your emotional response in order to stay in control at times of stress.

Our everyday problems, automatic unhelpful thoughts and unhealthy behavioural responses are all interrelated because an increase in stress-related tension also increases the likelihood of emotional disturbance.

In this session, you will:

  • Identify your emotional goals and what it takes to "undisturb" yourself in order to achieve them;
  • Separate unhealthy negative emotions from healthy ones and understand what creates emotional disturbance (unfortunate life events? breakups? traffic jams? friends/family?);
  • Learn a simple 3-step approach to regaining control over your emotions that can be applied at work and in your personal life;
  • Exercise choosing helpful thoughts and beliefs over unhelpful ones.

Denise Chew

yoga-denise-chew.jpg

Denise discovered Ashtanga Yoga in 2001. In 2004, she went to Mysore to practice at the source with Shri K Pattabhi Jois and his grandson R Sharath Jois. Since then she has practiced with her teacher, Sharath, on an annual basis. She was given Level 2 authorisation (to teach the Full Intermediate Series) on her 2011 trip.

"Yoga started as a purely physical exercise when I picked it up in January 2001. With regular practice, I discovered yoga’s internal benefits. Focusing on the breath helps to quieten my mind, building self-awareness and calmness which I carry over from my practice to daily life. As my body is now familiar with the postures, it is free to move with the breath, becoming ‘meditation in motion’. After each practice, I feel calmer and refreshed - in body, mind and spirit."

"Yoga will be different things to different people. To some, it’ll just be a weekly exercise. To others, it’ll deepen into a spiritual practice and a way of life. Teaching gives me the opportunity to share my own yoga experience with others. My satisfaction comes from watching students evolve and grow as they embark on their own personal journeys.”
